Today, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana suspended the license of Advocate Vikas Malik, President of the High Court Bar Association, and prohibited him from practicing before any court pending resolution of complaints against him.

The Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council, chaired by Karanjit Singh and including members Rajat Gautam and co-opted member Ravish Kaushik, made this decision following allegations that Malik had removed the hard disk from CCTV cameras installed at the premises of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association.

Malik recently transferred the duties of HCBA President to Vice President Jasdev Singh Brar, following a decision by the High Court division bench led by Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, which took cognizance of a recent FIR against Malik for allegedly assaulting a lawyer.

Today, the Bar Council suspended Malik’s license after learning that he had reportedly removed the DVR/hard disk from CCTV cameras in an attempt to tamper with evidence related to the FIR.

We have been informed that several complaints of sexual harassment involving female advocates and staff members of the Bar Association have been lodged against respondent No. 2 (Vikas Malik). Consequently, the Chief Justice’s office, which has received these complaints, has been instructed to provide copies of the complaints to the Bar Council for investigation and appropriate action. As the first bench, it is our solemn duty to uphold the dignity of this institution, which appears to have been tarnished by respondent No. 2. Despite being fully aware of the ongoing proceedings before this Court, respondent No. 2 has yet to appear.

This directive was issued in response to a PIL filed by Punjab & Haryana High Court advocates, accusing Malik and the Secretary of the High Court Bar Association, Swaran Singh Tiwana, of misappropriating and misusing the association’s funds.
